Analysis of Market Applications and Development Trends of Water-Based Adhesives

2018-09-18

Water-based adhesives are environmentally friendly adhesives prepared using natural or synthetic polymers as the adhesive and water as the solvent or dispersant, replacing toxic organic solvents that pollute the environment. Existing water-based adhesives are not 100% solvent-free and may contain a limited amount of volatile organic compounds as auxiliaries in their aqueous medium to control viscosity or flow.

Classification
1. Classification by material: Polyvinyl alcohol water-based adhesives, ethylene-vinyl acetate water-based adhesives, acrylic water-based adhesives, polyurethane water-based adhesives, epoxy water-based adhesives, phenolic water-based adhesives, silicone water-based adhesives, rubber water-based adhesives.
2. Classification by application: Water-based adhesives for construction, water-based adhesives for packaging, water-based adhesives for automobiles, water-based adhesives for footwear, water-based adhesives for daily use.
3. Classification by solvent: Water-soluble and emulsion-type adhesives, two characteristics and modifications.
4. Classification by market: Latex, PVA, acrylic, EVA, and PU.

Advantages
Typically, natural and soluble synthetic polymers are used to manufacture water-based adhesives. Water-based polymers are soluble and have limited moisture resistance, while some plant polymers are insoluble, thus providing extended moisture resistance. The benefits of using water-based adhesives are their ability to improve solid content, high initial tack, low toxicity; low solvent content, high composite strength, no curing required, as it is an undeniable environmentally friendly product.
Due to the properties of water-based adhesives such as high solid content, high adhesion, low toxicity, and environmental friendliness, the factors hindering market growth are their complex formulation methods. Compared with solvent-based adhesives, the formulation process of water-based adhesives is very complex.

Applications
Advances in the production of water-based adhesives and bio-based water-based adhesives have provided tremendous opportunities for market growth, widely used in various industrial and commercial fields. The main factors driving the water-based adhesives market are the growing demand in their application areas. Water-based adhesives are mainly used in books, packaging, tapes, paper lamination, flooring and construction, footwear, automotive interiors and exteriors, etc. Its application markets mainly include Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

Market Development Trends
The Asia-Pacific region is the main market for water-based adhesives, due to the growth of the automotive, packaging and construction industries. Developing countries such as India, Brazil and China, driven by the automotive industry, have promoted the development of the water-based adhesives market. In addition to the dominant market, the Asia-Pacific region is also the largest producer of water-based adhesives.
China is the country with the most production plants due to the availability of raw materials and low production costs. North America ranks second in the growth of the water-based adhesives market. The demand for water-based adhesives is mainly in the packaging and automotive industries. Europe ranks third in the market in terms of consumption, but second in the production of water-based adhesives. European environmental agencies support the application of water-based adhesives because they are less harmful to the environment.
At present, due to the strict requirements of the whole society for environmental protection and green development, and with the progress of technology and society, water-based adhesives, which have advantages in environmental protection, will eventually replace solvent-based adhesives on a large scale, and will have a bright future. This is an inevitable trend.
