VAE emulsion, short for vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion, is a high-polymer emulsion made by copolymerizing vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers as basic raw materials, adding emulsifiers and initiators through a high-pressure emulsion polymerization method. VAE emulsion appears milky white or slightly yellow. The copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate is the most important product among ethylene copolymers. With a vinyl acetate content ranging from 70% to 95%, it usually appears as an emulsion, known as VAE emulsion. VAE emulsion properties: VAE emulsion possesses permanent flexibility. VAE emulsion can be considered an internal plasticizer for polyvinyl acetate emulsion. Because it introduces ethylene molecular chains into the polyvinyl acetate molecule, it creates discontinuity in the acetyl group, increasing the rotational freedom of the polymer chain, reducing spatial hindrance, making the polymer backbone softer, and preventing plasticizer migration, ensuring permanent softness. VAE emulsion has good acid and alkali resistance. VAE emulsion maintains stable performance in the presence of weak acids and weak alkalis. Therefore, it does not undergo emulsification when mixed with weak acids or weak alkalis, resulting in a wide range of applications. VAE emulsion is resistant to UV aging. Because VAE emulsion uses ethylene as an internal plasticizer for the copolymer, the VAE polymer has internal plasticizing properties, and the plasticizer does not migrate, thus preventing polymer aging. Therefore, not only does VAE emulsion have excellent UV stability, but the film formed by VAE emulsion also retains this characteristic. VAE emulsion has good compatibility. VAE emulsion can be mixed with most additives, such as dispersants, wetting agents, antifreeze agents, antifoaming agents, preservatives, flame retardants, etc., thus meeting various needs; VAE emulsion can be mixed with many pigments and fillers without agglomeration; VAE emulsion can be directly mixed with many low-molecular and high-molecular water-soluble polymers, such as polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution, polyethylene glycol aqueous solution, starch or modified starch gelatinization liquid, sodium polyacrylate aqueous solution, polymaleic acid aqueous solution, polyethylene oxide aqueous solution, urea-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde aqueous solution, hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose aqueous solution, etc.; VAE emulsion can be directly mixed with many other high-polymer emulsion polymers, such as polyvinyl acetate emulsion, polyacrylate emulsion; VAE emulsion can be directly mixed with aldehydes, esters, ketones, organic acids, polyols, higher alcohols, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, etc., such as formaldehyde, glyoxal, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, acetic acid, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, benzene, toluene, xylene, octanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, etc. VAE emulsion has good film-forming properties, with an MFFT generally below 5℃, so it can form a good film, and the film has good barrier properties against water droplets. VAE emulsion has good adhesion, and it has good bonding to fibers, wood, paper, plastic films, aluminum foil, cement, ceramics, etc. Uses of VAE: VAE emulsion is widely used as a base material for adhesives, with good mechanical properties, small average particle size of emulsion particles, a good balance between creep resistance and heat sealing, good wet tack, and fast curing speed. VAE emulsion has wide adhesion properties, and in addition to bonding wood, leather, fabrics, paper, cement, concrete, aluminum foil, galvanized steel sheets, etc., it can also be used as pressure-sensitive adhesive and heat-seal adhesive, and it has unique and excellent adhesion to some difficult-to-bond materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polyester films. VAE emulsion can be used as a base material for coatings, such as interior and exterior wall coatings, roof waterproof coatings, fireproof coatings, and anti-rust coatings. VAE latex paint coatings have good blister resistance, are resistant to aging and cracking, have good adhesion to various substrates, are safe and non-toxic, and are easy to use. VAE latex paint can be applied not only to wood, brick and concrete, but also to metal, glass, paper and fabric surfaces, and it also has good affinity with paint, and can be brushed on each other's surfaces. With the improvement of people's living standards, people's awareness of green environmental protection has gradually increased, especially the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, and the Municipal Finance Bureau jointly issued the "Notice on the Charging Standards for Volatile Organic Compound Pollution Discharge", Beijing will start collecting volatile organic compound (hereinafter referred to as VOCs) pollution discharge fees from October 1, 2015 in 17 sub-categories of 5 major industries including furniture manufacturing, packaging printing, petrochemical industry, automobile manufacturing, and electronics industry. Reducing the emission of volatile organic compounds can greatly improve the air quality of people's living environment. Coating enterprises improve their production methods, accelerate the implementation of "oil-to-water", and continuously develop low-VOC environmentally friendly water-based coatings to reduce the VOC emissions of coatings and achieve a smooth transition to green development for enterprises. This is not only a responsibility for coating enterprises themselves, but also an environmental protection commitment to the entire society. VAE emulsion can be used in paper processing. With the development of synthetic polymer technology, many polymer materials play a great role in paper processing, especially some synthetic polymer emulsions have superior advantages in paper processing, and VAE emulsion is one of them. VAE emulsion is mainly used in paper impregnation, paper coating and pulp addition in paper processing. Its characteristics are that it can glaze various types of paper, increase the dry and wet strength, toughness, gloss of the paper, improve color stability, reduce ink consumption, and improve the grade of paper. As a pulp additive, it can be used to make various non-asbestos gaskets. VAE emulsion can also be used in special paper processing, such as using dry-process expanded paper to make disposable napkins, towels, diapers, sanitary napkins, etc. VAE emulsion can be used as a cement modifier. Cement is one of the most widely used materials in construction engineering. However, pure cement products have the disadvantages of easy cracking and poor water resistance, impact resistance, and acid resistance, which to some extent affect the practical effect of cement. Because VAE emulsion has good water resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and weather resistance, and its price is lower than that of similar emulsions, it is being widely used as a mortar modifying material in various civil engineering projects.
